Using eCommerce Software custom templates?

Sunday, April 20, 2008
One of the best things about being a Netsuite web designer, is the ability to customize the ecommerce templates at almost every level. In all of our projects, we produce at least four templates: Homepage, Category Template, Category Items Template, Item (Product) Template and a custom shopping cart design (some limitations). There are a few other sub-templates needed as well, like for related items and checkout. These templates are then added to the web store theme, then the CMS and product category will continue to use these ecommerce templates every time another page is created.

I'm on my Mac, the word "Products" in the search input should not be there on focus, jquery would be perfect for these netsuite sites since it's so unobtrusive by design. Besides that it looks great!

I really like the shopping cart in the top left column. Its reassuring. I always know how much I'm spending and its always there no matter how deep into the site I go. I just bought a bunch of stuff online today and the store had something similar but didn't sub-total my spending. Would have been nice if it did.

Hi Alex, Good work... Even though I've entered meta tags in the meta tag area netsuite provides... some seo checking tools have said they are missing. I check the page source and I can see them and they seem to be in the right place but they aren't registering, Thanks, Dave, http://www.deepsurplus.com/

eCommerce Web Design for Musical Instruments

Saturday, March 15, 2008
When you are doing ecommerce web design using Netsuite, it is tough to continually roll out new concepts and still try and maintain best practices. The last thing you want to do is create a super cool new design, but the user experience is confusing and your conversation rates begin to drop.

In this new design, we maintained our best practice standards but introduced a new navigation structure using dynamic CSS and JavaScript. We used a horizontal rollover navigation that stays selected when you arrive at the respective category. This site just went live, so we are still fixing a some of the bugs. So take a look, and let us know what you think!

I am always worried about netsuite people taking logos done by designers and not branding them into netsuite sites in a professional manner.

You on the other hand did a great job on blending this logo into your netsuite webstore design.

5 stars:)
Good job, Alex.

can you use authorizenet merchant in Netsuite?

email to friend goes through www.alexdesign.com site, looks strange and unprofessional?
There is a way to use authorize.net as your merchant, but it is not a standard selection in NetSuite.

Email as friend is limited in NetSuite default settings, so we use a dynamic one to send the page you are on. Not sure why you saw it unprofessional. Its, simple and easy to use. I was surprised to find out how many people use that function. Its very active.

Next time don't post anonymous and share your website for review.
Hi alex,

The website looks awesome.

When you say its 100% Netsuite do you mean its using default themes of netsuite or is it hosted as html pages in netsuite.
Thanks for the kudos.

This is site is completely hosted in Netsuite using a CUSTOMIZED theme. You could also use HTML pages, but to get the benefit of the CMS - Content Management System you should use a theme.

Also, customize the theme, dont use the default.
Wonderful website. I was looking at this website and was wondering how you insert the 'outerwrapper' and 'innerwrapper div's tags after body tag.

I was trying to insert those tags in Body attribute of default themes in netsuite but it was not allowing.

Could you please tell me where do you insert those tags?

Thanks in advance..
Those div tags are automatically added by NetSuite when you set the "Page Alignment" align and "Page Width" within your admin. That is located in the Web Site Setup > Appearance. Url below to Web Site Setup.

https://system.netsuite.com/app/site/setup/siteadmin.nl?whence=

Let me know if that helps.
You are an absolute genius..it worked. The wrapper tags worked. I am trying built one site on NetSuite and your work is an inspiration for me.

In Netsuite its kind of difficult to generate the drop down menus dynamically from the account but you seem to be doing it without using external html or static links.

Your work is awesome. :) Thank you so much for running this blog and your help :)
hi alex..

Any idea as how far we can customise the customer centre 100% width pages like sales order, transaction etc using CSS. I am trying to fit it within 900px but struggling with it. Netsuite specifies table with 100% and there is no way i am able to wrap in another table of restricted width.

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

NetSuite Tips: Basics - Back Up Your Code

Tuesday, February 19, 2008
Here is a quick tip for anyone (web developer or non-techie) just starting an eCommerce website built on web based applications. It is a basic rule that you should follow to avoid breaking your website when updating the code of a Netsuite web store theme.

Ecommerce applications like Netsuite, Volusion and even Yahoo stores have text area form fields in their apps to enter HTML/JS code for the templates. Because these input fields are very small, it is very easy to delete or change this code. I was asked to fix this unintentional problem several times, but it could have been avoided. The solution is simple, copy all the code out of the text area fields and into .html files every time. Then you have a backup of this files, plus edit them using a WYSIWYG like Dreamweaver or a text editor.

Here is an example of an item template from a Netsuite web store theme. The code is moved from the text area field into a txt file. Simple, until you forget to do it.

Nice work.

I assume that pretty much all the sites discussed here have "Advanced Site Customization" which we don't have. I'd be interested to see if there are any cool sites that have been developed without it. I think we've pushed the limits of the basic set up as far as we can by adding HTML to the discriptions, greetings etc and judiciously using hosted pages. You're welcome to take a look;

http://www.happytailsspa.com/

I'd be interested to know any other tips and tricks anyone else in my position has used to overcome the limitations of the basic set up.
Very interesting blog.

Keep up the good work!
Kevin,
Great job on your site. Yea, AlexDesigns will not work on a site unless it has "Advanced Site Customization". We require the flexibility to remove the code. This allows the site to use more CSS and make it more SEO friendly.

Please all the custom designs stuff we do. Want to write a guest post about non-advanced sites templates?
All these sites were designed in NetSuite??? So I guess I would be looking for some tips on what would be the best way for us to merge our design with NetSuite. I can design a site using dreamweaver without issues just still not sure how to combine the two.
Chris,
You can use Dreamweaver for NS sites. I use it, but it is a little different process than normal. You can not FTP to the NS file cabinet, so you need to create hardcode HTML pages and upload them by batching (via zip files). Or you need to manually move all the content into the Netsuite Content Management System (CMS). Hope that helps.
Hello,

Can someone please provide inforamtion that explains how to move the search box from the default left alignment?
Thanks

Custom Web Tags in NetSuite Theme

Thursday, November 15, 2007
Are you understanding the NetSuite Theme better now? In this post I will show you examples of using "Custom Web Site Tags" in your NetSuite Theme.

What are Custom Web Site Tags?
You can define custom tags to customize specific aspects of your store. You create custom tags to define information for each individual tab in your Web store. Then, you insert these tags into your HTML templates. You define your tag substitutions on tab and category records.

They are NetSuite's version of "INCLUDE" files.

Tips when creating tags:
  1. Use all CAPITAL LETTERS with no spaces, but you can use underscores
  2. Add a default value (if needed) but add a DIV with an ID around HTML, like below
netsuite custom web tags

Here is an illustration of how I set up my Custom Web Site Tags in the NetSuite Theme. Initially this may look complex, but really it is basic HTML/CSS. NetSuite still uses TABLES, so the Custom Web Site Tags are added to each TABLE cell (TD). This is a little tricky so if you have questions, post a comment.

netsuite web theme tags

So why do I want to use these?

Here are a few reasons.
  1. You have a non-secure image or tracking pixel and need to switch it between HTTP and HTTPS
  2. You want to change a marketing banner between different categories
  3. You want to completely remove a right or left column on certain pages
  4. You want to host HTML pages and use "INCLUDE" files to make updates easier
Here is an example of site that utilizes Web Site Tags on NetSuite hosted HTML pages. EnergyFirst sells Protein Shakes and they have a lot of content. We used the tags to easily create hundreds of custom designed articles, content sections and landing pages. Creating HTML pages gave us more flexibility with the design, plus .html pages are said to be better for NetSuite SEO.

NetSuite Web Design Theme Explained

Thursday, November 1, 2007
I receive a lot of NetSuite questions, but the most popular NetSuite web design question is "How does the web site theme work?" It's pretty easy once you understand how each of the templates and layouts are grouped together. So I have created a diagram to be used as a cheat sheet.

The theme is broken up into the standard Header (Logo and Tabs Template), Left Side Navigation, Content Area Template, Right Side Navigation and Footer. Each section can be removed or changed in size to totally customize your NetSuite Web Design.

The main area I want to point out is the "Content Area Template". This area changes based on the website section you are on. For example, when clicking a category link, the content area will then use the Category Level Layouts and Templates. A "layout" is simply a wrapper of two templates. The two custom templates are known as "list" and "list cell". In HTML terms that means, the "layout" is a TABLE tag, the "list" is the HTML contained inside that TABLE, and finally the "list cell" is the actual TD for each item that is displayed. This is also known as nested HTML tables.

TIP: Use NetSuite Help, really, it works well. Do a search for "Web Site Tags" in the NetSuite Help to get the full list of all the tags that can be used in each of the Theme sections and different custom templates.

Please let me know if this was helpful (or confusing) in anyway. Post Your Feedback - Click Here!

Thank you. There is so little help around aimed to beginners that everything basic you post is welcomed.
thank you so much for posting this. It's a point reference for me now.
Do you think you'll be adding more helpful stuff like this on a regular basis?
Yes, I will be adding more tips and insight into NetSuite advance site customization. If there is something specific you would like to see, please leave a comment.
How do you detect if a user is logged in so you can switch content?
I believe you would need to create pages or information items that are only accessible to logged in members. Currently you can't switch a small page section/widget based on if they are logged in unless you use SuiteScript.
